Does Your Jewellery Photography Make the Cut?

Many luxury jewellery brands just don't get how important good quality product photography is. My rule of thumb when it comes to luxury brand product photography is this: the quality of your photography needs to be 'as good if not better than' the quality of your product or service.

Jewellery can often be a nightmare to photograph. Typically with the leading luxury jewellery brands each piece is photographed a number of times (composites) and these composites are layered on top of each other and then edited to create the final image. This is costly and time consuming, but if you are selling products in the thousands, it's a must.

However, I don't think you have to go that far. My equally impressive and much cheaper approach is to use a decent photographer in the first place and then a high quality, artistic, retoucher.

Take a look at the image below of piece of jewellery from my client Deema. The before shot is the raw photo and the after shot has been enhanced by a professional jewellery retoucher.

You can see the difference instantly. The colours are brighter and more even, marks and blemishes have been removed, and some of the reflections have been carefully enhanced to improve the appearance.

The quality of your product photography is key. It's the first thing people see, so it has to be perfect. You will rarely get a great product shot right of the bat, particularly with jewellery, so consider using a good retoucher.
